The design and maintenance of vehicles have a direct impact on comfort of passengers, damage to goods, health conditions of the tracks and vehicles, but also on operational safety and service quality of the railway transport. This course answers the following question: 'How do you design and maintain railway vehicles that satisfy the societal demands of running faster and carrying more in a safe, comfortable and economical way?' The course focuses on the vehicle dynamics; vibration, derailment and stability are discussed in relation to the railway track through wheel-rail contact. During the course, a complete rail vehicle has to be modeled. This model helps to define loading conditions for structural design and limits for maintenance. Also, the performance of the vehicles can be evaluated.
