Anthonie Boogaard obtained his master degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Delft University of Technology, with a specialisation in Engineering Dynamics. For his thesis, he investigated the dynamic coupling between the factory floor and high accuracy machines, such as wafer scanners. This was an inteship together with Philips Innovation Services. Since 2012 he is working as a PhD student on the DrTrack project, where his main focus is to better understand the dynamics of switches and crossings.

Vibration measurements for condition monitoring on crossings

Condition monitoring is getting increasingly popular, as it is a valuable tool to tell when and where maintenance is needed. As crossings (frogs) gets impacted with every train passage, vibration based condition monitoring is very suitable to monitor the physical condition of frogs and to prevent malfunctioning of the turnouts. This will greatly reduce the disruption of the train operation. With the DrTrack system it will be possible to perform this monitoring from the train, which allows to have a 24/7 monitoring system with relatively low implementation costs.

To successfully apply vibration based condition monitoring, it is important to understand the dynamic behaviour of frogs. For this purpose, experiments will be performed. This should not only provide a better insight into the dynamics and degradation of frogs, but they will also be used to validate FE models and for the verification of the DrTrack system. These experiments consist mainly of impact measurements and the more important pass-by measurements. The impact measurements are performed both in laboratory conditions and in-situ. The laboratory tests are to validate the individual components, whereas the in-situ measurements allow to determine the global parameters.

For the pass-by measurements, a couple of frogs will be instrumented with strain gauges and accelerometers. This has never been done to this extend before. These measurements will not only be used for model validation and the verification of DrTrack, but also for track degradation measurements, which is a key element for condition based maintenance. These measurements will impose a number of challenges with respect to signal processing. All of which will be dealt with within this research as well.
