Meet our team Zhiwei Qian is a researcher and lecturer working at Delft University of Technology, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences, Section of Railway Engineering. He studied Engineering Mechanics as a major in Bachelor program at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China during the years 2002~2006. In the meantime, he followed Accounting courses as a minor. After that he started the Master of Science study in Structural Engineering at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. He did a two-month intern as a Structural Engineer at Arup Amsterdam. He graduated with honors in the year 2008, specialized in Material Sciences. In addition he received an extra certificate for the subject of Structural Mechanics. During the period 2008~2012, he worked on the European FP7 project CODICE (COmputationally Driven design of Innovative CEment-based materials) towards a PhD degree at Delft University of Technology, Section of Materials and Environment. He visited the National Institute of Standards and Technology in the United States for eight months to develop the Anm model which can simulate the material structures of concrete with irregular shape aggregates. After receiving his PhD diploma, he worked on the 18-month Post-doc project ConSluM (Concrete Slump Model) at Materials innovation institute M2i, in collaboration with CRH/cementbouw and Delft University of Technology. At the end of the year 2013, he switched to Railway Engineering and started to work as a researcher and lecturer. Zhiwei Qian is a specialist in wheel-rail interface and concrete materials. He is the responsible instructor for the MSc and PhD course Wheel-Rail Interface. He also gives lectures for the course Micromechanics and Computational Modelling of Building Materials, as well as the annual RILEM International Workshop MMC (Multiscale Modeling Course for Concrete). He has comprehensive experience in investigating cracking and fracture phenomenon in cement-based materials. His current research interest is the interaction between wheel and rail, focusing on the fatigue and fracture damage in the rail material.
